A post-doctoral fellow position will become available on October 1, 2014 in the laboratory of Dr. Hiroyuki Nakai at the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics, Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) for a highly motivated individual who can work in a new project aimed at engineering adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors able to target the mammalian hypothalamus with sterilizing molecules. This new project is a joint effort with a team led by Dr. Sergio Ojeda at Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). The Nakai lab studies the biology of AAV and its application for gene therapy. In particular, the Nakai lab takes non-traditional multi-disciplinary approaches to study AAV and gene therapy using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, barcoding, computer simulation and modeling, bioinformatics and biostatistics in addition to traditional low-throughput structural and functional biology-based approaches. The Ojeda lab focuses on elucidating the molecular and genetic mechanisms that control mammalian puberty by operating within neuronal and glial networks of the hypothalamus. The ultimate goal of our joint team effort is to establish a nonsurgical method for permanent sterilization of dogs and cats using an AAV-based gene delivery approach. This research is supported by a grant from the Found Animals Michelson Foundation.
